I’m currently taking a Master’s level Bayesian statistics course, and I have to admit – it’s a snooze fest. My professor’s webcast-based lectures, devoid of a textbook, leave me feeling lost and unmotivated. The terms he uses are confusing, his voice is monotonous, and there’s no personality to his presentations. I’m not alone in my struggles, but I’m the only one speaking up.
I’ve always had high standards for myself, and I’ve given my fair share of presentations. I believe a teacher’s value lies in their ability to teach – if I’m not absorbing anything or if I’m confused, that means the teacher has done a poor job.
When I find myself constantly seeking clarification from ChatGPT on minor terms and formulas, I think it’s a sign that my teacher has failed to do their job. A student fails when they plagiarize, cheat, or refuse to study. But I’m trying to study; I just can’t focus on this particular course.
So, how do you cope with poorly taught statistical courses? Do you have any tips for staying motivated and engaged? I’d love to hear your experiences and advice.
