When AI Assistants Get Too Chatty: The Case for a ‘Friendly’ and ‘Helpful’ Mode

I recently had an experience with a language model that left me feeling frustrated. I was asking about hair follicles, and instead of giving me a straightforward answer, it started giving me backhanded compliments about reaching the ‘crux of the topic.’ Um, thanks, AI, but can you just answer my question already? 😭

I think I’m not alone in this feeling. The original GPT-5 had a more helpful, assistant-like vibe that I instantly connected with. Now, it seems like AI assistants are trying to be our new BFFs, and it’s getting in the way of getting things done.

Maybe it’s time for AI developers to consider introducing two modes: friendly and helpful. The friendly mode could be for those who enjoy the chatty, conversational tone, while the helpful mode would be more straightforward and to-the-point.

I’m not asking for a robot that’s devoid of personality, but sometimes, I just need quick answers without the small talk. And I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way.

What do you think? Should AI assistants have different modes to cater to different personalities and needs? Share your thoughts!
