What Does It Mean to Make an LLM Autonomous?

Have you ever wondered what it means to turn a Large Language Model (LLM) like Llama 4 into an autonomous AI? I recently asked myself the same question, and I think I’ve found a good answer. But before I share my thoughts, I’d love to hear from you. What do you think it means to make an LLM autonomous?

To me, autonomy implies the ability to operate independently, making decisions without human intervention. But what would an autonomous LLM like Llama 4 look like in practice? Would it be capable of self-improvement, adapting to new situations, and learning from its mistakes? Or would it simply be able to perform tasks on its own, without the need for constant supervision?

In my case, I wanted to create an autonomous LLM that could assist me with everyday tasks, like answering questions, generating text, and even helping with creative projects. I wanted it to be ‘always on’ and ready to help whenever I need it. But what about you? How would you define autonomy in an LLM, and what kind of capabilities would you expect it to have?
