Weighing the Options: Masters in Computational Linguistics vs. Statistics

Choosing the right graduate program can be a daunting task, especially when you’re torn between two offers that seem equally appealing. That’s exactly what happened to me when I received acceptance letters from the University of Stuttgart in Germany for a Master’s in Computational Linguistics and NC State in the USA for a Master’s in Statistics.

My goals are clear: I want to become employable in a tough tech market, settle and work in the EU long-term, and specialize in machine learning, NLP, or AI. With a B.A. in Linguistics and prior coursework in statistics and coding, I’m well-positioned to succeed in either program. But which one is the better fit?

The University of Stuttgart’s program in Computational Linguistics stands out for its strong industry connections and research focus. The program is also relatively affordable, with a total tuition fee of €6,000. On the other hand, the MS in Statistics at NC State offers a full-ride scholarship, which would greatly reduce my financial burden. However, I would eventually need to move to the EU, either through a work visa or by pursuing a second Master’s degree.

So, what’s the right choice? If you’re in a similar dilemma, here are some factors to consider:

* Cost: While the full-ride scholarship at NC State is attractive, it’s essential to consider the long-term costs of living and working in the USA versus the EU.

* Career goals: If you want to specialize in machine learning, NLP, or AI, the Computational Linguistics program at the University of Stuttgart might be a better fit. However, if you’re interested in statistics, the MS program at NC State could provide more opportunities.

* Location: If you’re set on working in the EU long-term, the University of Stuttgart’s location in Germany might be more convenient.

Ultimately, the decision comes down to your individual priorities and goals. I hope this helps anyone who’s facing a similar dilemma!
