The Surprising Reality of Automation: It Takes Time

I recently built my first workflow, and I have to admit, it was a humbling experience. I thought automation was supposed to save time, but it took me around 7-8 hours to create a workflow that parses vehicle details from an email into a spreadsheet. And that’s with the help of ChatGPT!

Of course, the end result is worth it. The workflow now updates rows if the VIN already exists or adds new rows if not. But I couldn’t help but wonder, how long will it take for this automation to recoup the 8 hours I spent creating it?

I realized that automation is not a magic pill that instantly saves time. It takes effort and time to set up, but the payoff is worth it in the long run. With this workflow, I can now focus on more important tasks, and the data entry process is much faster and more efficient.

So, if you’re just starting out with automation, don’t be discouraged if it takes time to set up. It’s a process, and it requires patience and persistence. But the benefits are well worth the effort.
