The Shifting Goalposts of Career Advancement

The Shifting Goalposts of Career Advancement

Have you ever felt like you’re doing everything right, but still can’t seem to get ahead in your career? That’s exactly what’s been happening to me. For the past two years, I’ve been actively pursuing a promotion at my job, asking directly what I need to improve to move up from Junior to Mid-level.

The first time I brought it up, I got clear feedback, worked on it, and was acknowledged in my next performance review. Encouraged by that, I brought up the promotion again, but was given a new list of things to work on. And that’s when it started to feel like the goalposts were shifting.

I’m not claiming to be perfect – there’s always room to grow – but it’s frustrating when it feels like the rules keep changing. Has anyone else experienced this? It’s taking a serious hit on my self-confidence, and honestly, I feel like sh*t.

I want to know if you’ve been in a similar situation. How did you handle it? Did you feel like giving up, or did you find a way to push through? Share your story, and let’s figure this out together.
