If you’ve been following the AI scene, you’ve probably heard the buzz around GPT-5. The latest model from OpenAI is touted as a significant upgrade from its predecessor, GPT-4. But what’s really going on behind the scenes? According to a report from The Information, the upgrades in GPT-5 are mostly limited to solving math problems and writing software code. That’s not exactly earth-shattering news.
What’s more surprising is that the first attempt to create GPT-5, codenamed Orion, was actually launched as GPT-4.5 because it wasn’t deemed good enough. Insiders believed that none of OpenAI’s experimental models were worthy of the name GPT-5 as recently as June. It seems that the hype surrounding GPT-5 might be a bit overblown.
So, what does this mean for us? Should we be excited about GPT-5, or is it just another incremental update? I think it’s essential to curb our enthusiasm and look at the facts. While GPT-5 might be an improvement, it’s not the revolutionary leap some people are making it out to be.
