As a Math Bio PhD working in the pharma industry, I’ve come to realize that my skills aren’t as transferable as I thought. The data science work I’ve been doing is limited to creating simple listings, and I’m feeling underutilized. I’ve taken courses in data engineering and machine learning, and even worked on personal projects, but it hasn’t led to any promising job opportunities. I’m not alone in this struggle. Many PhDs are facing similar challenges in the job market. It’s puzzling, considering the level of expertise and dedication that comes with earning a PhD. So, what’s going on? Is it the job market, or is it us? I’d love to hear from other PhDs who have experienced similar struggles, and any advice on how to better position ourselves in the market would be greatly appreciated.
