The GPT-5 Reality Check: Why AGI May Not Be Coming Soon

I’ve been following the progress of Large Language Models (LLMs) closely, and the release of GPT-5 feels like a turning point. For a while, I thought we might see a stagnation in LLM progress, but I was also open to the possibility of continued improvements. Now, I think it’s clear that we’ve reached a plateau. And you know what? I’m kind of relieved.

GPT-5 is an amazing technology, don’t get me wrong. I’ve been using LLMs almost daily since ChatGPT launched in 2022, and they’ve become an essential tool in my workflow. But the hype around AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) has been getting out of hand. GPT-5 proves that we’re not on the cusp of a revolution that will solve all the world’s diseases, replace all jobs, or create a rogue superintelligence.

This means we can breathe a sigh of relief and focus on our careers, learning, and personal growth without worrying about being replaced by AI. Software engineering, and other ‘advanced’ white-collar jobs, are safe for the foreseeable future.

The vibe shift introduced by GPT-5 is a reality check. It’s time to temper our expectations and appreciate LLMs for what they are – powerful tools that can augment our abilities, but not replace human intelligence.
