The Good and Questionable in Zuckerberg’s Vision of a Superintelligent Future

Mark Zuckerberg has outlined his thoughts on superintelligence, and it’s a mixed bag. On one hand, he gets it right when he says that AI will improve all our existing systems, especially in areas like medicine, science, education, and enterprise. He also recognizes the potential of superintelligence to begin a new era of personal empowerment, where everyone has a personal AI that helps them achieve their goals and become a better friend to those they care about.

However, there are some red flags. For instance, his statement about superintelligence being directed centrally towards automating all valuable work and then humanity living on a dole of its output raises concerns. Does he think a Universal Basic Income (UBI) or similar programs are necessary to rescue the millions of workers who will lose their jobs to AI?

Moreover, while Zuckerberg emphasizes the importance of mitigating safety concerns and being careful about what we choose to open source, he doesn’t seem to fully acknowledge the need to address the corrupt systems of government and news that are controlled by a few billionaires. Unless we fix these systems, superintelligence won’t be able to save us from a dystopian future.

Despite these concerns, it’s clear that Zuckerberg is excited about the potential of superintelligence to improve our lives. And rightly so – with personal AI advisors, therapists, and friends, we could be much happier, healthier, and good. But let’s not forget the bigger picture and the need to address the systemic issues that could hinder the benefits of superintelligence.
