I just came across a fascinating quote from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and it’s got me thinking about the future of software development. He said, ‘We are going to go pretty aggressively and try and collapse it all. Hey, why do I need Excel? I think the very notion that applications even exist, that’s probably where they’ll all collapse, right? In the Agent era.’
It’s a bold statement, and it raises some interesting questions. If applications ‘collapse’ in the sense that they become integrated into a single, AI-powered platform, what does that mean for software developers and related jobs?
On one hand, it’s exciting to think about the possibilities of having a single, intelligent agent that can handle a wide range of tasks for us. No more switching between apps or worrying about compatibility issues. But on the other hand, it’s hard not to wonder about the potential consequences for people working in the software industry.
Will we see a shift towards more AI-focused roles, or will there be a need for humans to work alongside these agents? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain – the future of software is going to be shaped by AI, and it’s going to be interesting to watch.
What do you think about Nadella’s vision for the future of software? Do you see it as an opportunity or a threat?
