As a data scientist, I’ve been fortunate enough to work remotely for a while now. But there’s a flip side to this convenience – my social anxiety has been getting worse. I love the work itself, building models, finding insights, and all that jazz. But when it comes to presenting those insights, I get really anxious. It’s easily the part of the job I dread most.
I think being remote makes it harder. Less day-to-day interaction, fewer casual chats – and it just feels like the pressure is higher when you do have to speak. Imposter syndrome also sneaks in at times. Tech is constantly evolving, and sometimes I feel like I’m barely keeping up, even though I’m doing the work.
It’s not just about the work, though. It’s about the feeling of being disconnected from colleagues and friends. When you’re not physically present, it’s easy to feel like you’re missing out on conversations, inside jokes, and watercooler moments that help build relationships.
So, I’m wondering: does anyone else feel this way? Have you found ways to make communications feel less overwhelming? It would be great to hear from others who are in the same boat.
Maybe we can find ways to make remote work more inclusive, more social, and less anxiety-inducing. Maybe we can create virtual watercoolers where we can casually chat and build relationships. Who knows? But for now, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
