Every time I scroll through the news, I’m bombarded with headlines about mass layoffs. ‘X employees laid off by company A’, ‘Y number of employees to be laid off by company B by the end of this month’, and ‘Company C has increased their revenue by (some impressive number)% by laying off Z employees’. It’s like the job market is shrinking before our eyes.
But then I see the other side of the coin – AI this, AI that, AI everywhere! It’s as if AI is the solution to all our problems. I’m not buying it, though. I’m waiting for this AI bubble to burst.
Here’s the question that’s been nagging me: if everybody’s getting laid off, who’s getting the job? Entry-level positions are disappearing thanks to Artificial Intelligence. I’m starting to think that we’ll soon have a pandemic that only affects software engineers and developers.
It’s ironic that while companies are laying off employees, they’re also investing heavily in AI. Are they expecting AI to take over the jobs they’re eliminating? I’m not sure what the future holds, but I’m certain that we need to have a conversation about the impact of AI on the job market.
