I used to love my job. But then, the company started demanding more and more from us devs. The pressure to constantly perform, hit deadlines, and always ‘improve’ was suffocating. I felt like I was stuck in a never-ending cycle of stress and anxiety.
The fear of being ‘PIPed’ (Performance Improvement Plan) due to ‘performance’ issues was real. I saw it happen to colleagues, and it was terrifying. The job market didn’t help either – the uncertainty of how long I’d be unemployed was always looming.
But I knew I had to take control of my stress. So, I started doing a few things that helped me cope:
## Frugality
I’m naturally frugal, so I saved a lot in my retirement account and built a 1-year emergency fund. It gave me a sense of security, knowing that I had a financial safety net.
## Social Life and Physical Activity
I made time for socializing and physical activity. It’s amazing how much these simple things can help destress me. But, I have to admit, as soon as I’m back at work, the stress comes flooding back.
## Your Turn
So, how do you guys combat stress? Have you considered taking drastic measures like beta blockers for anxiety? I’d love to hear your tips and stories.
