Statistical Analysis Help: Overcoming Complexity Without an Expert

Hey there! I recently got asked by a friend to help with some statistical analysis, but I’m stuck. The thing is, I haven’t done anything serious with statistics since college, and my comfort with R is often mistaken for actual statistical prowess. My friend can’t afford a real statistician, so I’m trying to rise to the challenge.

The task at hand is to analyze data to see if the number of observations per unit effort (OPUE) is influenced by factors like month, season, and site. Normally, I’d use a generalized linear model (GLM) for this, but the data is skewed due to lots of surveys with zero observations. The data also has right skew, lots of zero values, and uneven sampling effort by month and site.

Honestly, I’m just stuck and would love any advice on where to go from here. I know it might be a super obvious answer, but I’m not sure what to do.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation? How did you handle it? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
