Should I Settle for a Job That’s Not My Dream?

I’m stuck in a toxic job that’s draining my energy and affecting my well-being. I’ve been managing a team and handling multiple projects, but without a title change or pay increase. My real passion is working on challenging technical problems, not shielding my direct reports from management’s unhinged requests.

I’ve been searching for Applied Scientist or Research Scientist roles, but it’s tough to get interviews. I suspect my location and inability to relocate are major obstacles. Recently, I received a job offer with better pay and a healthier culture, but the work isn’t aligned with my interests. It’s tempting to take it just to escape my current role, but I’m worried I’ll end up in another unfulfilling job.

So, is it unreasonable to turn down any new role in this market? Am I holding out for a fantasy position that doesn’t exist? I’m torn between the need to escape my toxic job and the desire to find a role that truly aligns with my passions.

I’ve turned down similar roles before, but my current burnout is making me question my priorities. I’m not sure if I can accurately evaluate any corporate job at this point. Have you ever been in a similar situation? How did you decide what to do?

In this job market, it’s hard to know what’s reasonable and what’s just fantasy. I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences.
