Reviving Lost Art: How Generative Tools Brought Back a Forgotten Medium

Imagine creating art that’s truly one-of-a-kind, with every piece impossible to replicate. That’s what David Dolan did in the 80s, using a unique mix of lacquer, pigment, temperature, and time. His art was all about embracing the unpredictable, and the results were stunning.

But then, the EPA reformulated nitrocellulose lacquer, and David’s entire process disappeared. By 2009, he was left with nothing.

Fast forward to today, and we’re working with David to revive his lost art form using generative tools. The goal is to capture the same unpredictability and chaos that made his original art so unique.

We’re not trying to replicate David’s past; we’re trying to remix the soul of it. The results are stunning, with digital artworks that pulse with life.

Take a look at these early outputs, created without any prompts or guidance. Just form, rhythm, movement, driven by layers and entropy, just like the originals.

What do you think? Which one feels most alive to you? Where would you take this next? We’re hoping to bring these digital artworks to life physically soon.
