As a linguist specializing in accent, phonetics, and phonology, I’ve always been fascinated by the potential of AI and speech recognition to enhance my work as an accent coach. But, I knew I needed to develop my skills in programming and NLP to take my expertise to the next level.
That’s why I’ve started learning Python and exploring the world of Natural Language Processing (NLP). My goal is to specialize in speech processing and recognition, and I’m excited to share my journey with you.
## My Background
I’ve been working in another industry, doing automations with Power Automate and TypeScript, which has given me a solid foundation in programming. But, I knew I needed to focus on NLP to make a meaningful impact in speech recognition and analysis.
## The Challenge
I’m currently taking the MOOC from the University of Helsinki, which has been an incredible resource. However, I’m also considering pursuing a degree in Speech and Language Processing (SLP) from the University of Edinburgh. The only hurdle is the hefty tuition fee of almost €40,000, which is a significant obstacle for me as a Spanish citizen.
## The Path Ahead
So, what’s the best path forward for me? Should I continue with online courses and MOOCs, or should I pursue a degree in SLP? I’d love to hear from others who have navigated a similar journey and can offer valuable insights.
