Finding a flat in London can be a daunting task, especially when considering factors like crime rate, commute time, and rent prices. To make this process easier, I created an interactive map that visualizes London’s flat search by postcode. The map takes into account crime rate, number of tube stations, median rent, and commute time to Fleet Street, central London.
The idea came to me when I first moved to London and realized that there wasn’t a comprehensive map like this available. I used various data sources, including Police.UK, Valuation Office Agency, Google API, Findthatpostcode API, and tube-postcodes/Robin Kearney@GitHub to create the map. I also utilized tools like D3.js and RStudio to collect and analyze the data.
The map shows that crime rate, rent prices, and commute time vary significantly across different postcode districts. For example, areas with higher crime rates tend to have lower rent prices, while areas with more tube stations tend to have higher rent prices. By visualizing these relationships, renters can make more informed decisions about where to live in London.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this project and any suggestions you might have for improving it. Have you ever struggled to find a flat in London? How do you think this map could be useful for you?
