Is Learning PostgresSQL Worth It for a Linux Admin?

As a Linux admin with 12 years of experience, I’m facing a dilemma. My organization is migrating all databases from Oracle and SQL to PostgresSQL, which means I need to learn PostgresSQL to stay relevant. But is it worth my time?

I’m already investing time in learning GCP, K8s, and Terraform to switch my career path. Should I add PostgresSQL to my skillset, or is it just a nice-to-have?

The thing is, as a Linux admin, I’ve worked closely with DB teams, and I’ve seen how they operate. Learning PostgresSQL would not only help me understand their perspective better but also enable me to communicate more effectively with them. Plus, having knowledge of PostgresSQL would make me a more well-rounded professional in the Linux admin space.

But the question remains: is it worth the effort? I’d love to hear from other Linux admins who’ve made the switch or are considering it. Has learning PostgresSQL opened up new opportunities for you, or was it just a useful skill to have?

Share your experiences, and let’s discuss whether learning PostgresSQL is a worthwhile investment for a Linux admin like me.
