I recently found myself in a dilemma that many of us can relate to. I’ve applied to both full-time jobs and internships that have conversion possibilities as a new grad. I’ve gotten a few interviews, but two opportunities caught my attention.
One is for an internship with a company I’m really interested in working with. The interview process is relatively simple, and they seem to love me. They’re speedrunning me through the process, and I’m 80% sure they want me as their top candidate. The internship pays $21 an hour, and if converted to full-time, it would offer a $60k salary and benefits, all remote.
The other opportunity is for a full-time job that I’m also interested in. However, the interview process is longer and more challenging, with a 5-day take-home exam. I’m underqualified for the job, but my skills matched well, and they’re willing to give me a shot. The offer is similar to the internship, with a $60k salary and benefits, also remote.
Now, I’m faced with a tough decision. Should I stall out the internship and wait for the full-time job offer? Or should I take the guaranteed internship and risk losing the full-time job opportunity? What if I get the full-time job offer, do I just ditch the internship?
Here are some pros and cons to consider:
**Guaranteed Internship:**
– It’s a sure thing, and I can start working sooner.
– The company is interested in me, and I’m interested in them.
– The pay and benefits are good.
**Possible Full-Time Job:**
– It’s a more senior role, and I might not be ready.
– The interview process is long and challenging.
– There’s no guarantee I’ll get the job.
Ultimately, the decision depends on my priorities and goals. Do I want a guaranteed opportunity with a company I like, or do I take a risk and wait for a potentially better opportunity?
