As a data engineer and architect, I’ve worked my way up from analytics engineer, building end-to-end pipelines that served data scientists, visualizations, applications, or other groups’ data platforms numerous times. I’ve finally secured a more leadership-type position as the principal data strategist, but I’m facing a new set of challenges.
The company is in the construction sector and largely only uses Microsoft365, with limited Azure usage that’s currently locked down by IT. There’s no one at the company who understands cloud concepts or software engineering, and the CIO doesn’t even understand containers. It’s a culture shock for someone like me who’s used to modern practices.
I’m trying to figure out what to do here. On one hand, I have the elevated title, a flexible schedule, and the freedom to think about pet projects. On the other hand, I’m paid ‘ok’ but nothing special, and I’ve given up a $40k higher salary when I took this position. The company’s old-school approach to technology is frustrating, and I’m struggling to stay current.
My plan is to try to make it here at least 2 years and use the elevated title to network, grow my brand by posting on Medium and LinkedIn, take some MBA level courses to understand business goals, and try to stay current by taking on side consulting jobs. But I’m not sure if it’s worth it, or if I should bounce and go back into a higher-pressure, faster-moving environment as a Lead Data Architect/engineer.
The biggest challenge is trying to prove my strategy can create movement at this current company. I’m scared of staying here and getting really far behind and never being able to get another position. I need advice on how to navigate this situation and make the most of my time.
The Struggle is Real
- How do I network effectively and make the most of my elevated title?
- How can I stay current with the latest technology trends without breaking the bank?
- What are some MBA level courses that I should take to understand business goals?
- Should I stick it out or bounce and go back into a higher-pressure environment?
The Goal
My ultimate goal is to become a Director of Data Platform, which could mean a significant salary increase. But I need to make sure I’m taking the right steps to get there. I’d love to hear from experienced folks who have been in similar situations.
