From Data Analyst to Data Science: A Graduate Student’s Job Search Journey

Hey there, fellow job seekers! I’m a part-time graduate student who’s recently found myself back on the job market. After being laid off from my full-time role as a Data Analyst due to ‘AI-powered restructuring,’ I’m looking to transition into full-time Data Science or Software Engineering roles that leverage my analytical skills.

My experience is a bit unconventional, having worked primarily with engineering teams to develop analytics dashboards and web apps for internal staff and client projects. My research background is in biochemical and genetics, but I’ve highlighted my data science experience that led me to join a local retailer as an analyst.

One of the biggest challenges I’m facing is the gap in my resume from June 2023 to May 2024. During that time, I started a doctoral program in computational biology but switched to data science in January 2024. Before landing my recent role, I worked in retail.

I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by my resume, which seems all over the place. That’s why I’m asking for your honest feedback – please, rip my resume apart! I want to know what I can do to improve my chances of landing a job in Data Science or Software Engineering.
