Disenchanted with Tech: A Personal Rant

Disenchanted with Tech: A Personal Rant

I’m not alone in feeling disillusioned with the tech industry, right? As someone who graduated in 2020 and has been working in DevOps for the past three years, I’ve seen firsthand how the industry has changed. And not for the better.

Recently, I got laid off due to ‘business org restructuring’ – a fancy way of saying the company didn’t want to pay me anymore. And now, I’m stuck in a job search that feels like a never-ending nightmare.

But it’s not the job search itself that’s the problem. It’s the soul-sucking feeling of having to sell myself to companies that are actively contributing to societal destruction. 90% of job ads are for gambling sites, crypto scams, or AI nonsense that’s draining our society of its humanity. The rest are highly contested and often problematic in their own ways.

I’m tired of feeling like I need to sacrifice my values just to make a living. I’m tired of the tech industry’s obsession with profits over people. And I’m tired of feeling like I’m the only one who’s noticed.

So, is anyone else out there feeling as disenfranchised with tech as I am? Or am I just being dramatic?
