Can Advanced Excel and Data Experience Make Up for Lacking SQL Skills?

I’m about to interview for my dream job, but I’m worried I might not tick all the boxes. The company is looking for someone with SQL skills, which I don’t have. However, I’ve got a strong background in advanced Excel, Microsoft SPSS, and pulling data from programs like Salesforce and NetSuite. I’m confident I could learn SQL quickly, but I’m not sure if my existing skills are enough to make up for the gap.

The recruiter seems interested in me, despite my lack of SQL experience. They’ve even emailed me again, so I’m taking it as a good sign. But I want to know if my data experience can really translate to a SQL-based role.

I’ve already told the company I’m willing to learn SQL, but I’m wondering if my background is enough to get me started. Has anyone else been in a similar situation? Can advanced Excel and data experience really make up for lacking SQL skills?

Let me know your thoughts!
