Hey there, fellow data enthusiasts! I recently stumbled upon a conversation on this subreddit that got me thinking. Apparently, junior data engineer positions are scarce, and most data engineers have years of experience in other roles like data analysis, database administration, or BI development. But I’ve got a different story to share. I landed a data engineer role with just one year of experience as a BI specialist in the same company. So, I’m wondering: am I just lucky, or is this a common phenomenon in certain regions or industries?
I’d love to hear from others who have made a similar transition. Is experience really a prerequisite for breaking into data engineering, or are there other factors at play? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below!
From my end, I can attest that having a strong foundation in programming languages, data manipulation, and visualization definitely helped me make the leap. But what about others who might not have the same background? Are there any alternative paths to becoming a data engineer?
Let’s discuss and learn from each other’s experiences!
