As an undergrad in computer science, I’m sure you’re thinking about your next steps. If you’re interested in pursuing a PhD in AI, you might be wondering how to increase your chances of getting accepted into a top-tier program. One strategy is to gain research experience, especially at your target lab. But how much does a postbacc research internship really help with PhD admission?
In my case, I’m finishing my undergrad in CS in 2026 and want to do up to two years of unpaid research internships at my target lab. I’m aiming for ultra-competitive schools, and I’m considering postbacc positions at these labs. I’m currently working on a first-author project with a leading professor in the field, but I don’t think this project will be done before the PhD admission application deadline.
So, I’m seriously considering postbacc research internships at top labs, even if they’re unpaid. But will it be worth it? Would it be better to pursue an MSCS or postbacc research internship?
In this post, I’ll explore the benefits of postbacc research internships and how they can increase your chances of getting accepted into a top PhD program in AI.
