Boosting Your Data Engineering Career: Choosing the Right Team

As a junior data engineer, I’ve been faced with a tough decision – whether to join a team that focuses on job monitoring and bug fixing with an outdated tech stack, or a data science team that leverages cutting-edge tools like GCP and Vertex AI. Both options have their pros and cons, but which one is better for career growth and finding jobs down the line?

On one hand, the job monitoring team has a well-established reputation with long-term engineers, and I already have experience working with SSIS and SQL Server. However, the tech stack is outdated, and I risk getting stuck in a comfort zone that doesn’t challenge me to grow.

On the other hand, the data science team is new and consists of another junior like me, but they work with modern tools that are in high demand in the industry. Although I may not have as much experience with GCP and Vertex AI, I’ll have the opportunity to learn and build new pipelines and ETL processes.

So, which team should I choose? In my opinion, joining the data science team is the better option for career growth. Not only will I gain experience with in-demand tools, but I’ll also have the chance to work on more exciting projects that involve building and innovating.
